This past week I decided to check out the Society6 artist’s community/storefront. I have been shopping around for an online print and frame service for some of my photography anyway, so I decided, why not try a service that also connects artists together, similar to how the Blurb DIY book service does? So far, I really dig the simple interface, all the great printing options and the community sharing. Some folks have even stopped by to show me some support…(I suspect many of them are fellow VW Microbus fans). I did order a framed photo print and I’m eagerly awaiting to see how it comes out. For a 26′x22′ custom framed print I found it to be very affordable. I should be seeing it in the next couple of weeks. I’ll report back on the print and frame quality. Stay tuned…

About Society6:

“The artwork on Society6 is created by thousands of artists from around the world. When you buy a product from Society6, we produce it using only the highest quality materials, and ship it to you on behalf of the artist.”

The photos above from a recent Summer camping/rafting trip are totally fun. Here in Seattle, we’ve been lucky to even approach 80°, so these images really make me long for Summer.
Most of my skiing experience prior to this year has come from the east coast. So, as you can guess I’ve been very excited to get in on the pacific northwest flavor of the sport. The best part about living in Seattle is that big mountain access is only a couple short hours away by car, especially compared to the 5+ hour drive up to Vermont that I used to endure while living in NYC back in the day. Lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun skiing at Stevens Pass with my wife, and I’ve brought along my compact Canon G10 to get a few photos as well. I’m still working up to the idea of bringing up the 7D… There are a few more to check out on my Flickr photo stream via the link below.

I first heard news of these fascinating and newly discovered stereo photographs this morning on the local news while getting ready to head off to work. Taken to be viewed through a stereo-optic viewer, these images were captured by color photography pioneer Frederick Eugene Ives in 1906, about six months after the massively destructive ‘Great Quake’ in San Francisco. I’m amazed by the overall clarity and color accuracy. 1906! Think about that!

Over the holidays I took some time away from blogging, reading twitter updates and checking in with Facebook… pretty much all of my usual online activity was reduced to a minimum. It was nice. I spent Christmas with family in San Francisco at my sister’s place, ate WAY too much food, chased my nephews around with Nerf guns and took a bunch of photos. Above are a few shots from the trip (top one is a composite of three separate photos). I plan to process and post more this week. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays as well. Happy 2011!

What a fun way to share your Flickr and Facebook photos in video format on either YouTube or Vimeo. The service atuomagically generates an upbeat presentation of your photos in a simple 3 step process. It’s like having your life flash before your eyes, only without the life threatening part of the experience… Expect to see a lot of these videos on the social nets.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, so as one might guess, my iPhone pics have been a little on the creepy side of the subject matter spectrum lately. I figured it would be fun and appropriate to share some of them, Happy Halloween!

Oakland based computer programmer Eric Fischer has a very interesting photo set on his Flickr stream called ‘Locals and Tourists’. The set contains visualizations of various cities (seen above are NYC, San Francisco and London) photo activity of locals and tourists. The geotagging data is represented by different colors, blue = locals, red = tourists and the yellow = photos that are undefined (The info is pulled from public Flickr and Picasa search APIs). I find these infographics to be really interesting, I’ll be sure to go to all the blue areas the next time I travel to a new city/destination, and… I find it to be be no surprise that Hoboken is almost completely blue except for a little spec of red at the Stevens College lookout, which, in my opinion is the world’s best view of Manhattan.

Above are a few of my favorite pics from this past week that I took with my iPhone 3Gs. I used the ‘Plastic Bullet’ app from software company ‘Red Giant’ to add the interesting border effects and vignette treatment. ‘Plastic Bullet’ has quickly become my favorite filtering tool over ‘hipstamatic’ because I think the overall look of the export is better quality and the app does not interfere with how I choose to upload my photos, the way the hipstamatic app does. I can use ‘Plastic Bullet’ more like a utility, and it does not try to sponsor or tag what I create with it’s branding and marketing. A great photo editing app for $1.99.

I was pretty busy over the weekend, trying to make some headway on my photography book project that I’m calling ‘So Far Seattle’. A few weeks ago I previewed a test print of the book and received a lot of positive response, feedback and tips on how to go about producing a more refined version. After some trial and error I decided to try out a service called ‘blurb’ and their bookmaking application called ‘BookSmart’. Thanks again for the recommendation Katie! Above are a few spreads + the cover/back/sleeve (shown in the ‘BookSmart’ work environment) that I’ve completed so far, the hard bound book is going to be 80 pages total. I’m not sure how many I plan to print yet… I’ll probably do another test print and see how people react to it before I send out for more. Let me know what you think!
If you frequent my blog, which is wishful thinking on my part, you may have noticed the radio silence over the last few days. A couple of times a year I actually get to see my parents in person. This past weekend they were able to come out for a visit and it was their first time in Seattle, so, as you can imagine I wanted to show them around a bit. As we walked the various neighborhoods of Seattle I happened across a bunch of great looking camper vans to add to my collection.

It’s been almost 6 months since I moved to Seattle, I’ve taken a lot of pictures of this amazing city so far. Two weeks ago I realized that I had almost 100 Seattle photos up on Flickr already, so I decided to test print an 84 page photo book to see how it would come out. I decided to check out Qoop for the first try, the service easily taps into my Flickr photo stream and the quality is pretty decent for the soft cover. Pretty much standard magazine quality. I’m looking to test a couple more services, iPhoto and Snapfish, before possibly printing a batch to sell via some local book stores. Being new to all this print business, if anyone has any other quality/solid printing tips/services that I should try out, please let me know. You can view some of the pics I plan to print on my Flickr stream below.

Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg (founders of: http://flowingmedia.com/) used a clever algorithm that they developed for the WIRED Anniversary visualization and a collection of photographs from the Boston Common Flickr stream to create the stunning graphic visualization above. In the short description, their software calculated the relative proportions of different colors from various photos taken in each month of the year, and rendered them on a wheel. I like the end result, to me it resembles the tiny razor sharp folds of the iris of one’s eye. Check out more of their work via the link below:

Being a new resident of the pacific northwest, I’ve started to discover a number of interesting cultural subtleties that are different from the east coast and the midwest where I have lived in the past. One of the little granular details that has caught my eye is the local love for the mini camper van. In my Seattle neighborhood of Queen Anne you can find these vans sprinkled along the side streets in surprising numbers. I would say that in most Seattle neighborhoods they are a pretty common sight. With all the beautiful wilderness to explore in the Pac NW it makes perfect sense as to why there are so many camper vans around. I like them, I think they add a lot of character to the area and I plan to shoot as many of them as I come across in hope of building up a decent collection. I’ll keep posting them to my iPhone pic posterous site, enjoy.
