I thought the above in-flight turbo prop pictures taken by Jason Mullins with his iPhone 4 were pretty amazing, and at first I had thought maybe they were an odd Photoshop experiment of some kind. As it turns out, it’s a photographic phenomenon/effect called ‘rolling shutter’ that occurs when an image is scanned either from top to bottom or from left to right when taking pics of objects that are moving at a high rate of speed. You learn something new every day, well, almost every day.

I had a great time taking the pics, pulling them all together and I learned a lot about online book making. This experience has definitely got me thinking about my next photo project (that is now underway), only this time I’ll be shooting it with a 7D! I’ll be sure to bring you along for the ride. Thanks to all for the advice and support in making this first book happen!

The above captures are from his collection called ‘TILT’ and are a reminder that a simple skew or angle on an otherwise ordinary and everyday shot may cause the need for great attention. Applying this effect to the grand, iconic and always entertaining backdrop of NYC was probably not a bad idea either. More mind blowing photography beyond the link below.

Above are a few of my favorite pics from this past week that I took with my iPhone 3Gs. I used the ‘Plastic Bullet’ app from software company ‘Red Giant’ to add the interesting border effects and vignette treatment. ‘Plastic Bullet’ has quickly become my favorite filtering tool over ‘hipstamatic’ because I think the overall look of the export is better quality and the app does not interfere with how I choose to upload my photos, the way the hipstamatic app does. I can use ‘Plastic Bullet’ more like a utility, and it does not try to sponsor or tag what I create with it’s branding and marketing. A great photo editing app for $1.99.

This past Monday night I was invited by a friend to view a documentary directed by Jeff Malmberg called “MARWENCOL”, the story of photographer and artist Mark Hogancamp (creator of the incredible photos above). Without giving away too much of the plot, it’s about a man from Upstate New York who was brutally attacked and beaten into a comma by five men. Suffering from brain damage and a severe loss of memory he was left to take it upon himself to heal both physically and mentally from the senseless attack. Through his own creative thinking, talent for photography and scale model/replica building, Mark Hogancamp miraculously turns his life around and positively affects the lives of many others. “MARWENCOL” will be released theatrically in the U.S. by The Cinema Guild in the fall of 2010. I know I’ll continue to be inspired by this amazing film for some time, I highly recommend you check it out when it’s released this Fall. ★★★★★’s for sure.

Recently, a friend of mine from work introduced me to these amazing portraits, shot by Seattle based artist Dan Carrillo with his 8 x 10 Burke and James and an 11 x 14 Deardorff studio camera named ‘Daisy’. Using an old technique called ‘wet-plate collodion’ on plates called ‘Ambrotypes’ his images are all one-of-a-kind, similar to the more modern Polaroid, except they are composed of pure silver and somewhat transparent. In a time when photography trends try to emulate imagery from an earlier time and the emergence of popular iPhone photo apps like ‘hipstamatic’ and ‘Plastic Bullet’, it’s extremely refreshing to discover someone who is creating vintage looking images by means of a non-digital 100% genuine technique. The natural distress, grain and texture along with the super narrow depth of field make these images absolutely mesmerizing. Be sure to check out his Flickr photo stream via the link below for many more beautiful examples.

More details on the technique from Dan Carrillo:

“I shoot with a 16 inch(400mm) Wollensak Vitax f/3.8 portrait lens. The lens is a peztval type lens with a curved field and a variable soft focus. The technique is called wet-plate collodion and the plates are called Ambrotypes. I shoot onto clear glass plates onto which I pour collodion and subsequently sensitize in silver nitrate. The plate is loaded in to a modified film holder and then exposed in the camera. Exposures are about 4-8 seconds depending on bellows draw and lighting. Immediately after exposure the plate is developed while the plate is still wet and then fixed and washed. The result is technically a negative but when the plate is put in front of a dark background, it reads as a positive image.”

If you frequent my blog, which is wishful thinking on my part, you may have noticed the radio silence over the last few days. A couple of times a year I actually get to see my parents in person. This past weekend they were able to come out for a visit and it was their first time in Seattle, so, as you can imagine I wanted to show them around a bit. As we walked the various neighborhoods of Seattle I happened across a bunch of great looking camper vans to add to my collection.

This past week a friend of mine turned me on to the work of Portland based photographer and Alaskan commercial fisherman and skateboarder Corey Arnold. With so many of us out there ‘life documenting’ and ‘life tracking’ these days it’s really refreshing to come across someone who not only has a great talent and passion for taking pictures, but they also have exposure to some extremely unusual ‘day job’ conditions. As a result his work is beyond ‘one of a kind’, incredibly inspiring and thoroughly entertaining to click through.

This playful interactive installation was created by Amsterdam based artist, designer and experimenter Theodore Watson. He’s shown his work all over the world at museums and conferences such as the MoMA, Tate Modern, Ars Electronica, The Sundance Film Festival, Res Fest and many others. The concept makes visual associations from different people that are captured on site and compiled as interesting triptychs for all to enjoy. More description below…

Notes from his website:

“Portrait Machine is an interactive photography installation that visualizes the connections between visitors. It makes these connections based on a number of features, such as clothing choice, hair color, facial expression, and composition within the frame. It presents both similarities and differences in these characteristics, reminding us of our connectedness and uniqueness, creating strong visual patterns and playful juxtapositions. Portrait Machine was a collaboration with Kyle McDonald, it was produced by Nina Meilof for CBK Amsterdam.”

Artist Beni Bischof is based in Switzerland. I happened across his works through a Flickr contact of mine who is constantly posting the most interesting and outrageous works of fine art and photography. His site is completely unpredictable and thought provoking in the most interesting of ways. Everything is turned on it’s head, and then maybe sliced, diced and re-shuffled so that even the most ordinary objects appear to be extra, extraordinary.
