Notes from Vimeo:

“Love and Light” video aims to explore the relation between a musician and filmmaker and their personal reflection on memories. From Pedro Maia’s super 8 home movies archive, this video results from the work in the dark room using analogue means of light manipulation of the film in attempted to don’t allow us to forget the materials. Here are elusive shadows, the delicate materials turning and strobing and shaking as if to emphasize the fragility of the look, the fragility of these family films compacts have come apart at last, and in their dissolution, in the dying moments of their foreclosure and abandonment, these pictures have been left behind.”

Notes from Vimeo:

“A friend of mine, Grant Harold, sent me a song he wrote for Chrismas this year, and I liked its simple message. So I rang my friend Nathan Deceasar and asked if he wanted to join me in turning it into a card for friends. Grant and Nathan and I call our little trio “Group Hug”. I hope these holidays have been a time that you’ve gotten to share with people you love.”

Notes from YouTube:

“The film explores the increasing unease that many feel with modern society. We show this feeling through the eyes of ‘giant’ Carel Struycken, who rose to fame by playing iconic freaks in pop culture, like Lurch in the Adams Family and Mr. Homn in Star Trek.”

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any interesting music here on circuitbreaks. This past weekend while having breakfast at Easy Street Records in the new hood, Tame Impala bellowed into my ears and made my egg and cheese sandwich that much more of a deeper experience. The Australian three piece cranks out some seriously crunchy, fuzzy psychedelia that reeks of the acid rock that used to make my dad’s ears buzz and bend. Worth checking out. By the way, in the same sitting I also discovered this amazing Portland made Aardvark hot sauce. Also worth checking out.

This is a great video documentary on one of my personal favorite music related inventions of all times, the cry baby effect pedal. Myself being a guitar player, collector and overall enthusiast for 24 years now, must admit that there are very few other effects pedals or effects in general that have influenced music more than the cry baby. Makes for an entertaining view.

Notes from Vimeo:

“Cry Baby: The Pedal That Rocks The World tells the story of the wah wah effect pedal, from its invention in 1966 to the present day. Musicians, engineers, and historians discuss the impact of the pedal on popular music and demonstrate the various ways it has been used, as well as how its evolution has improved the ability of artists to express themselves musically. The film features interviews with Brad Plunkett, the inventor of the pedal, plus many other musical luminaries such as Ben Fong-Torres, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Buddy Guy, Art Thompson, Eddie Kramer, Kirk Hammett, Dweezil Zappa, and Jim Dunlop. These professionals explain how a musical novelty transcended convention and has become timelessly woven into the fabric of modern pop-culture.”

Yes, this is an odd one. But based on the excitement coming from a local Seattle DJ this morning, who discovered this and posted it on her blog… I think there may be some potential for this phenomenon to become a trend. And why not? In 2010 we saw dozens of cities partake in the whole Zombie Walk thing. It seems to me that throwing random parades in honor of your favorite musicians, artists or actors wouldn’t be such a far-fetched idea. Regardless, it makes for an entertaining occurrence + video.

Last week while commuting in to work I was lucky enough to hear this new track called ‘Saying Goodbye’ by the Greenhornes on KEXP radio. It was a clear morning, and Mt. Rainier was not only beaming in the rising sun (which is impressive enough), it was also sporting a massively epic plume of snow blowing off it’s peak by high winds. This song, that amazing view and a brand spanking new year on it’s way… needless to say, the vibe was good that morning, and it felt like I was truly saying ‘goodbye’ to 2010. The Greenhornes’s new album is out and appropriately named ‘★★★★’.

Notes from Vimeo:

“DJ Light is an immersive public sound and light installation that gives visitors the power to orchestrate an awe-inspiring performance of light and sound across a large public space. It was created for energy company Endesa as the cornerstone of their Christmas celebrations in Lima, Peru.

DJ Light is about the exhilaration of one person taking control over a massive space and manipulating the incredible array of light and sound within it using nothing more than their own body. It is an empowering experience where the public is invited to be the artist.

The installation consists of 85 giant globes of light, each capable of displaying millions of colours. As the “guest DJ” assumes their position on the podium, they can use their arms to point and gesture. These movements are translated in real-time into beautiful movements of light and generative sound across the space.”

The above life-like synth iPad app concept was created by talented designer and developer Jonas Eriksson, based in Sweden and Los Angeles. Myself being a bit of a musician, I love to see great app design that is inspired by retro analog recording equipment, tube amps and other old school audio interfaces. That kind of aesthetic just seems to have soul, even when applied to new technologies.
