Jim Denevan is currently in the books as the creator of the largest artwork in history, the above drawing is a segment of a larger design that in total is nine miles in circumference (located in Nevada, USA 2009). You can also view the drawing here on google maps. His works are temporary and eventually degrade and disappear by means of waves and weather, making them all the more precious and impressive to view in person while they are still intact. Pretty epic stuff. More examples of his work beyond the link below.

The first I saw of L.A. based, Kansas City born Kiel Johnson was the title screen of his time lapse video below (Cardboard Sculpture of a Twin Lens Reflex Camera) on Vimeo. Honestly I didn’t even play the video at the time. I guess I’d seen so much papercraft time lapse video on Youtube and Vimeo that I just numbly passed it by. Luckily, I saw some of his works again a few days ago on art mag site ‘High Fructose’ which inspired me to re-visit the vid. He’s got a really unique take on the whole cardboard sculpture medium. It’s somehow bolder, of higher quality and personality than a lot of other works that I’ve seen out there. His drawings are mind blowing as well and definitely worth checking out.

The animated composites are really well done and the added effect of motion-tracking makes it believable. Worth a view.

I love the premise of this online network of Doodlers. It’s a great way to share, compare and collaborate sketch phase ideas amongst friends who share the same doodling addiction. From ‘About’ page -> “Doodlers Anonymous was founded to celebrate our addiction, and like any other, we’re hooked. The need to draw, sketch, and doodle is constant. We doodle on almost anything we can find — pencil in a moleskine, marker on a napkin, ink on a torn receipt, sharpie on concrete. And we do it habitually — while on hold, in a meeting, during class, or while we should be sleeping.”

Above, illustrators Jeff Bowman, Andy Miller, Barrie Iman and Mathew Hodson design window murals on the windows of Converse stores in Glasgow and London. I enjoyed watching these guys do their thing. My favorite quote from this video was “we’re going to do this mad explosion of line work, kinda thing”. That makes complete sense to me and is probably how I would have described some of my work when I was studying fine art and illustration back in the day. Actually I would probably still describe some of my work that way to this day. Who am I kidding? I’m totally envious of the extremely creative, transient and computer-less nature of their day job. It would be a lot of fun to travel around and marker up windows with coffee in hand for a company like Converse. These guys have a good thing going on for sure. Worth a watch.
