Former Saint Paul, MN, current Portland, OR designer Dave Ewald has been adding to his Flickr stream lately with what he modestly describes as ‘proof of life’ photography. Some of my favorite shots from his collection (shown above) were taken in 2009 at the ‘Pendleton Round-Up’, one of the ten largest rodeos in the world that takes place in Pendleton, Oregon. I’ve been a fan of eBoy since they emerged from a different planet in 1997. I remember how unique their style of stacking pixels seemed to me at the time. London based ‘Farrow Design’ is producing some very strong logotype design, iconography, print and package design. I think what I’m drawn to most is their overall simplistic graphic style and hard hitting use of color. For more excellent work check out their site.

I rarely feature one designer twice in a day, but Berlin based motion graphics designer Jorinna Scherle has a lot going on (she’s the designer of the vimeo video post below as well). I first took notice of her work while browsing new videos on Vimeo. After some digging around on her portfolio, I’ve fast become a big fan of her work. The stills above were taken from one of her ‘personal projects’ on her site called ‘Cherry Blossom’. There are some very nice spatial effects happening as abstract shapes are elegantly introduced and dissolved + great colors throughout. She has many other videos and some other nice design concepts to look through. Great source for inspiration.

Graffiti artist and graphic designer Nico came up with a simple concept of Pantone color spray paint canisters and posted the mocks up on his Flickr stream. Since then I’ve seen these images pop up on a bunch of blogs e.g., Fubiz, Yayeveryday and a few others. I’m not sure why everything Pantone branded like bags, stationary, yo-yos or countless other chotchkies that I have seen in the past become so popular. It’s magic. All designers pretty much love Pantone. I’m sure if Mini Cooper came out with ‘Pantone Minis’ they would be all over the blogosphere as well. I must admit, this is a pretty cool idea and I could see them becoming very popular if they were to become a reality.

At a time when we are seeing sustainable materials being used for almost anything and everything, Berlin based designer Arndt Menke- Zumbragel is no exception and has created this beautiful bicycle frame from wood tubing. Weighing in at only 2.3 kg this fully functional bicycle is as much as a work of fine art as it is an engineering/cycling masterpiece. The bent wood detail on the rear fork is absolutely astonishing and well worth further investigation.
