Notes from YouTube:

“The film explores the increasing unease that many feel with modern society. We show this feeling through the eyes of ‘giant’ Carel Struycken, who rose to fame by playing iconic freaks in pop culture, like Lurch in the Adams Family and Mr. Homn in Star Trek.”

More detail from Vimeo:

‘As well as documenting various voices and experiences across surf photography, Smith worked with Allan Wilson from the Astray Collective, who acted as Director of Photography on the project. Together they logged hours of footage across the Atlantic coastline, traveling around Ireland, Cornwall and Manchester. Shot in Super 16mm film, as well as groundbreaking work with Canon 5D mk11 Digital SLR, Smith also projected images of the huge walls of water within which he works, on to monster urban landscapes such as sky rises and castles in Manchester, as well as the cliff lines at his home of Ireland’

This time, less focused on papercraft and more about quirky little life subtleties that seem to play up the old expression ‘less is more’ in a big way.
Notes from Vimeo page:

“All the Mentawai interviews were translated on location with Ricky, Gejeng and Will. However later to sync up the words to the interviews, I had to make a few Skype calls to Ricky and play him the audio. Because of that, some of the words might not be perfectly arranged in the time line, but the content is accurate.”

In the video above Philip Bloom discusses his use and overall take on ‘Social Media’. The two words actually make me cringe a little bit these days and I tend to avoid using them in conversation. People seem to get all charged up about the topic of ‘Social Media’. Does it work? Is it worth the investment? What’s the best way to use it? Does it eat up too much of our daily lives? Will it turn our children into zombies? All that energy spent debating and arguing, when at the end of the day ‘Social Media’ is really just a period of rapid growth for a few emerging technologies that happen to have increased our ability to communicate with each other and broadcast ourselves. Kind of like… if the CB radio, walkie talkie, beeper and cell phone had all been unveiled in the same year. People would have lost their minds for sure. Regardless, I dig Philip Bloom’s commentary here. He doesn’t try to make it out to be some kind of magical medium, he admits it takes time and effort… and that it really does work for his needs.

There is something wonderful about the contrast of tilt-shift, which makes everything look smaller or ‘toy like’, being applied to BIG NYC scenery. Sam O’Hare has captured some really fantastic HD NYC footage, from multiple vantage points with his Nikon D3. His shoot locations really resonate with me, I actually lived in those blurry buildings across the Hudson in the above ferry pic (Hoboken, NJ)… and took those same ferry boats to work every day. This video makes me want to go back to visit my friends out east. Every scene is very well captured and fun to watch. As a side note: you should see the view from the other side of the Hudson looking on to Manhattan…

Not too long ago I posted about the new Leica M9, now available for a cool 7K. I caught a lot of flack for that post on Facebook as the Leica (as I stated) is not the most economically sound decision to make when comparing to other cameras on the market… People wanted to re-enforce that idea I guess? If that post got them going then this new release (that I will spend some time salivating over as well) will really get them going. The Hasselblad H4D medium format camera weighs-in at an amazing 60 Megapixels and boasts breakthrough True Focus technology that uses highly-complex techniques and algorithms to aid in focusing on off-center objects. Sounds pretty sweet. It better be for 42,000$US! Back to dreaming…
