Since I traded in the old iPhone 3gs for the new iPhone 4s, my photo taking productivity has increased significantly. That’s the good thing. The bad thing is that my photo taking productivity has increased significantly and I haven’t touched my Canon 7D in weeks! I’ve found that the new 8MP camera and optics have really made this device less of a mobile phone, and more of a handy mobile camera, for me. I wonder when we’ll stop calling them ‘mobile pics’ all together? You can check out many, many more of my 4s pics on my Tumblr blog via the link below.

This, to me, is very exciting on many levels. Above are screen grabs from 360cities.net, a site that I have posted about a few times before because I find it to be a really innovative space to discover 360 panoramic photos. What makes this image of the Strahov library in Prague so special, is the fact that it’s the largest photo ever taken indoors as of March 2011 (40 Gigapixels). To give you an idea of how big that actually is, it’s like 5,000 times bigger than the photos coming out of a Nikon D50 or something like that. Crazy big! I also find this image to be super amazing because I have been lucky to experience the Strahov library personally back in 2006, and I know first hand that they don’t let just anyone take photos there, I almost had my camera taken away from me… So, it’s a pretty rare opportunity to even get a snap of this library, let alone the largest to date. Be sure to check it out and browse around 360cities.net a bit if you haven’t already. Don’t forget to go full screen for the best results.

More detail from 360cities.net:

“This image was created from 3,000 individual photos stitched together into a single image that is 280,000 x 140,000 pixels. That’s around 40 gigapixels, or 4000 megapixels. If you printed this photo it would be 23 meters (or 78 feet) long!”

Right out of the box I knew I had made the right decision and that this camera would be teaching me some new tricks and technique. Having become so used to my trusty ‘point and shoot’ G10, I was also a bit intimidated by all the menu settings and the larger size. I’m pretty excited that have so much to learn! Above are some of my first pics from this past weekend… a few more beyond the link.

I’ve been keeping a simple posterous iPhone pic blog for a while now. I like to post all the random day-to-day stuff that I come across, recently I’ve been posting sound clips from my guitar practice sessions as well… all in good fun. Those are three of my latest shots above. Lately my pic uploads have exploded because of my use of the ‘Hipstamatic’ iPhone app. If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s super fun and well designed, comes with different lenses, border sets and upgrades. It may be the hottest thing since the old Lomo style camera. For real. If you’re an iPhone user, you should definitely check it out.

With digital photography being such a healthy industry these days, you have a ton of people buying up new equipment and fueling new innovation. To me, this is both a good thing as well as a challenging reality to keep up with. I’ve spent the last year and a half trying to determine what camera I would like to upgrade from my trusty G10 with, in seek of a larger sensor size and possibly some of the HD capabilities that are now available. The Noktor 50mm lens may have helped me to decide. Boasting a max aperture of F0.95 this lens can pretty much see in the dark! It’s also the fastest lens designed for Micro Four Thirds cameras, of which I like because the sensor size is larger than what I have in my G10, but they are still pretty compact. I may get that Olympus after all… I’ll let you know what I decide.

Not too long ago I posted about the new Leica M9, now available for a cool 7K. I caught a lot of flack for that post on Facebook as the Leica (as I stated) is not the most economically sound decision to make when comparing to other cameras on the market… People wanted to re-enforce that idea I guess? If that post got them going then this new release (that I will spend some time salivating over as well) will really get them going. The Hasselblad H4D medium format camera weighs-in at an amazing 60 Megapixels and boasts breakthrough True Focus technology that uses highly-complex techniques and algorithms to aid in focusing on off-center objects. Sounds pretty sweet. It better be for 42,000$US! Back to dreaming…

Classic German camera design company Leica has come out with the M9 which will be replacing the now cult classic M8. The M9 will be selling for a cool 7K, not the most affordable camera on the planet but definitely one of the most desired. Any expert camera sales person will tell you that the Leica M8 and M9, with their steep price tags are probably not the best deals out there but if you’re looking for a Porsche rather than a peppy Toyota… you get the idea. The M9 is a full – frame 24 x 36mm and offers an extremely high-resolution sensor and beautiful high performance M lenses. Now I’m going to go salivate over more pics via the link below.

The intention of the above video is to show off the capabilities of the new Lumix GH1 frimware 1.1 update. Ken Yiu shot this video using a 1/2 slow shutter speed enabled by the new firmware. By shooting at 1/2 speed the camera captures more motion-lag (or blur) detail than shooting at a standard setting. When sped up the effect is a wonderful combination of smooth, blurred movement and great detail when objects are static. In the above video each shot was taken for 15 – 30 minutes and then sped up in Final Cut Pro. This technique definitely makes for a nice effect. See for yourself.

The Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds System uses an 18 x 13.5-mm sensor but will decrease camera body size by 50% by allowing the removal of the mirror box.
I find this video directed by cinematography grad student Karen Abad to be extremely entertaining in a quirky kind of way. The story is simple. Two young moderately tattooed hipsters find love through ‘Bomb Pops’, a Fixie, super skinny jeans and a crumb trail of childlike drawings. Doesn’t every cute horn-rimmed couple come together this way? Outside of all the trend traffic (that I find makes this piece a borderline ‘Urban Outfitter’ commercial), the cinematography is really well designed, the story is well told and shot with a Super 16mm camera to boot. Yes, a film camera… which I find very refreshing at a time when HD cinematography is so popular. Have a look. + I’m a fan of just about anything that the record label ‘Arts and Crafts’ releases, especially the ‘Broken Social Scene’.

Official music video for New Buffalo’s “I’ve Got You and You’ve Got Me” remixed by Broken Social Scene. Directed by: Karen Abad. Shot on Super 16mm with the Arri SR3 and a Bolex H16 Reflex on Kodak 7219 500T Vision 3 and 7205 250D Vision 2.
This moody depiction of The City of Lights otherwise know as Paris was masterfully directed by Paul Rojanathara. The piece not only showcases some of the beautifully lit architecture found in Paris it also pays tribute to all of the culturally diverse people who live there. The entire piece was shot impressively at night with a Nikon D90 and serves as great evidence of the camera’s strong low-light performance.

Notes from Vimeo:

SYNOPSIS :
City Of Lights… There are places which mere mention of the name evokes in the imagination of everyone the sense of a place instill by life, energy, historical and cultural heritage. Paris is this city of lights… It is from this inspiration that this short film bases its main direction: the idea that a city is driven by the unique energy of its citizen, by the strength of the ethnic and cultural diversity. This short film draws a portrait of people living and evolving in Paris, for most of them born in France or attached to it by choices, by their own story… It is from the individual background of these people that the word “light” makes sense, for them it is synonymous of existence, difference and cohesion…

- Shot with Nikon D90, please excuse the rolling line, it is just impossible to remove it with certain light source…waiting for a probable? D400.
- lens : TOKINA AT-X 12-24 mm & 50mm 1.8 nikon

Many of you (especially those who use Flickr) may already be aware of Flickr’s camera ratings/reviews but for those of you who are not Flickr users this may be useful information.

In the past couple of months I’ve had a few of my friends ask me about my pictures that post from my Flickr account to my Facebook wall. Questions like, “What kind of camera are you using?” and “What settings did you use to get that shot to come out?”, in response I have been sending them links to Flickr which is very convenient and it saves me from having to type out a long explanation.

Flickr not only serves as a great place to upload, store and browse photos it’s also (in my opinion) the best place to research cameras/mobile phone cameras/video cams before a purchase. Not only do you get all of the tech specs on a specific camera you can browse thousands of photos taken by hobbyist -> professional photographers using that specific camera. The ability to view their settings when shooting in low light and see the picture quality output is a pretty amazing (and telling) bit of information when shopping for a new camera. Flickr also provides user reviews, price ranges and information on the popularity and usage of specific cameras/devices.

Popularity/Usage information is very important because technology changes so quickly these days. For example, It used to be that Canon would come out with a new line of cameras about every 12 months, in the past 2 years Canon has been releasing new camera designs to the public every 6 months. By being able to see a device’s popularity/usage report you can quickly determine when the product has become obsolete or outdated… or when it may go on sale. You won’t get that information on other electronics retail sites.

Before your next big camera purchase I highly recommend you consider Flickr as a credible destination for research.

Here’s an abreviated list of Flickr’s unique features:

-> Ratings/Reviews – By professional and hobbyist photographers

-> Settings and Examples – Thousands of pictures/settings information

-> Popularity/Usage – Quick info on camera trends relevance

-> Mobile/Video/P&S/SLR/Rarity & obscure brand assortment

Check out the “all” camera page -> http://www.flickr.com/
