“Love and Light” video aims to explore the relation between a musician and filmmaker and their personal reflection on memories. From Pedro Maia’s super 8 home movies archive, this video results from the work in the dark room using analogue means of light manipulation of the film in attempted to don’t allow us to forget the materials. Here are elusive shadows, the delicate materials turning and strobing and shaking as if to emphasize the fragility of the look, the fragility of these family films compacts have come apart at last, and in their dissolution, in the dying moments of their foreclosure and abandonment, these pictures have been left behind.”

This past weekend while having breakfast at Easy Street Records in the new hood, Tame Impala bellowed into my ears and made my egg and cheese sandwich that much more of a deeper experience. The Australian three piece cranks out some seriously crunchy, fuzzy psychedelia that reeks of the acid rock that used to make my dad’s ears buzz and bend. Worth checking out. By the way, in the same sitting I also discovered this amazing Portland made Aardvark hot sauce. Also worth checking out.

Last week while commuting in to work I was lucky enough to hear this new track called ‘Saying Goodbye’ by the Greenhornes on KEXP radio. It was a clear morning, and Mt. Rainier was not only beaming in the rising sun (which is impressive enough), it was also sporting a massively epic plume of snow blowing off it’s peak by high winds. This song, that amazing view and a brand spanking new year on it’s way… needless to say, the vibe was good that morning, and it felt like I was truly saying ‘goodbye’ to 2010. The Greenhornes’s new album is out and appropriately named ‘★★★★’.

I happened across this talented and tight little Los Angeles based group called ‘He’s My Brother She’s My Sister’ on a friends Facebook page the other day (thanks Chris!). They seem to be channeling some serious ragtime retro goodness from an era that has long since passed us by. The vocal styling, upright bass and tap percussion gives this band an authentic and ghostly presence that I enjoy very much. Simply brilliant stuff. Definitely one to give a listen to while you sit back and enjoy your cool Sidecar on a hot summer eve.

I discovered this new video called ‘End Love’ by OK GO on a friend’s Facebook wall today (thanks Chris!). It’s definitely on par with what OK GO has smartly conjured up for themselves in the past, actually, this may be my new favorite video from them. Great slo-mo shots contrasted by high speed motion blur, and I love the time-lapse/stop motion effect + their brilliantly colored suits… It’s a visual treat, for sure. Don’t forget to mention the track… I really dig it, the track reminds me of something that could have been inspired by mid-80s Prince. So good.

I’ve been a ‘Black Keys’ fan since ‘The Big Come Up’ and ‘Thickfreakness’ days (2002-2003). It’s been a lot of fun to watch them evolve gracefully as a band over the years, they haven’t lost their dirty blues style. This video is pretty ridiculous, but I like that it was shot with a Canon 7D and that the track kicks ass, the way a Black Keys track should. Actually, the concept is, well… um, kinda cute? Never thought I’d say that word in relation to anything the Black Keys would produce. Makes for a fun view.

Amazing things are coming from designer, artist and musician Will Etling + his band ‘The Deadly Syndrome’ (Chris Richard, William Etling, Mike Hughes, and Jesse Hoy). I really dig the above album cover yarn installation that was built near the band’s practice space and shot during the day (for the front cover) and again at night (for the back). So simple, but at the same time the photos have a nice level of complexity and deepness to them. ‘The Deadly Syndrome’ is slated to release their new album on March 23rd, called ‘Nolens Volens’, which by definition means “Whether unwilling or willing.”. I was fortunate enough to have a preview listen of the entire album. Without saying too much, it’s perfectly moody, garnished with nice/subtle digital accents and absolutely magical from beginning to end… sure to be one of my personal favorites for 2010. I’ll post a more in depth description along with another reminder for you all to pick it up on the 23rd. You can download the debut single called “Wingwalker” now, via the link below.

I took notice of this campaign on the Creative Review.co.uk’s website last week. At first I was kind of feeling underwhelmed, but after letting the idea render in my head for a while I’ve decided it is a pretty innovative digital marketing approach even if there are very few exposures to be had from it. England’s ‘Editors’ have placed themselves into Google maps ‘Street View’ in a series of interesting night shots by photographer James Royall in order to pump up the excitement around their new album release. I don’t think the expectation or intent was to reach a billion people through this concept, instead, to create some mystique and a sense of innovation and relevancy to the band. Regardless, pretty interesting marketing tactics.
