I recall wasting away entire weekends playing Wipeout on Playstation with my friends when we were in college. It was a pretty amazing game back in the day when it first came out. The above vid is a ‘faked’ concept (according to my research findings) for a controlled quantum levitation mini version of the game. Like all sci-fi, it may not be real today, but the seed has been planted. Here’s an example on YouTube that is very real. Have a look.

Notes from Vimeo page:

“Midnight Sun: A natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun never fully sets and remains visible 24 hours a day. This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011. For 17 days I travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever I had the time. During my days shooting this film I shot 38,000 images, travelled some 2900 miles, and saw some of the most amazing, beautiful, and indescribable landscapes on the planet. Iceland is absolutely one of the most beautiful and unusual places you could ever imagine. Especially during the Midnight Sun when the quality of light hitting the landscape is very unusual, and very spectacular.”

Notes from Vimeo:

“This project explores the invisible terrain of WiFi networks in urban spaces by light painting signal strength in long-exposure photographs. A four-metre long measuring rod with 80 points of light reveals cross-sections through WiFi networks using a photographic technique called light-painting.”

Interaction designers have their work cut out for themselves these days, for sure. We’ve got a multitude of iPads, tablets, E-Readers, a bazillion different mobile phone devices, internet TV and many other untapped experimental multimodel, voice and gestural interactions to think about and design interfaces for. In addition to all of that, there’s this intriguing projection based interface called ‘Skinput’, ideated by Chris Harrison. I love this concept mostly for that fact that it’s NOT another screen that I have to carry around with me. I love it for the fact that it’s a more sanitary interface, especially for public ATMs and Kiosks. I love that it’s so much more of a sustainable interface, in that it re-uses a nifty hi-tech preexisting surface that we always carry with us, our skin! There’s so many reasons to explore this direction… very inspiring. Check out the video below.

A new friend sent me a link to this very intriguing multimedia projection on paper sculpture project earlier in the week. I really enjoy the overall visual effect and the mood set by the musical score and the quality edit. The project itself is very interesting and is best explained with the words of the creators.

Notes from Vimeo:

‘Projection & Paper Sculpture: Robert Seidel
Soundtrack: Richard Eigner

Chirality is a scientific term describing a structure that is not identical to its mirror image. “Chiral” collects cinematic etudes, which develop various conceptual approaches in order to expand the two-dimensional image into space. They are projected onto a sculpture (510 x 260 x 370 cm) and a screen (250 x 200 cm) made from handmade Taiwanese paper and develop very different lives on these configurations of the same material.

The amalgamation of volumetric lights sets ideas from Chinese calligraphy into motion and melts them with influences from European Art Informel as well as impasto painting to an abstract-organic sculpture. The installation is completed by a soundtrack by Austrian composer Richard Eigner (ritornell.at). With the premiere in MOCA Taipei the first iteration of the long-term project was presented…’

Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg (founders of: http://flowingmedia.com/) used a clever algorithm that they developed for the WIRED Anniversary visualization and a collection of photographs from the Boston Common Flickr stream to create the stunning graphic visualization above. In the short description, their software calculated the relative proportions of different colors from various photos taken in each month of the year, and rendered them on a wheel. I like the end result, to me it resembles the tiny razor sharp folds of the iris of one’s eye. Check out more of their work via the link below:

His typography and graphic design skills are extremely refined and tend to skew a bit on the sci-fi/hi-tech end of the spectrum, which I like. Kinda geeky, super cerebral and well crafted. Very inspiring works beyond the link below. He’s one to keep an eye on.

Designer, programmer and inventor duo Michael Flückiger and Nicolas Kunz have developed a dynamic font system/interface that they are calling ‘LAIKAFONT’, as part of their bachelor thesis study at Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. The font is modified through many different outside forces e.g., motion, weight and even some obscure tests from the circadian rhythm of a geranium plant (whatever that is). In short Michael Flückiger and Nicolas Kunz are exploring the potential of fonts to live freely in within the digital medium. If the font is not set fixed to the side of a truck or on a piece of newspaper, why should it not be modular, dynamic and reactionary to the outside world? Hmmmm, interesting stuff. Now go play with it yourself.

Visit -> http://www.laikafont.ch/applet/test_eng.html

From Vimeo Page:

“For our bachelor thesis, we engaged ourselfs with dynamic typography, especially with dynamic typefaces. Since not much work has been done in this field, we devised a system in which a typeface would not be defined static fonty styles anymore but would be able to change it‘s shape and appearance at any moment reacting to a broad spectrum of inputs.”

At first glance the content seems to be pretty interesting, I do suspect that because of the amount of contributors that the quality of curation may become a bit sub-standard over time. It is a nice idea and I do see this kind of large scale corporate sponsored group blog/crowd sourcing portal to become pretty trendy, I hope these corporations follow through though, and actually try to learn from the content they are pulling together for innovation and not just using this platform as another means to get their logo in front of eyeballs.

It’s not everyday that you come across a website so interesting and so inspiring that you lose complete track of time, forget to make dinner and do the upcoming week’s laundry. That’s pretty much where I found myself the other evening after clicking through some of the content and postings on Spacecollective.org. SpaceCollective.org is an online community of post-ideological, non-partisan, forward thinking terrestrials. It’s a place for minds from all over the planet to come together to explore what it means to be human today and into the future. Created by filmmaker Rene Daalder (creator of The ‘Future of Everything’) and designer Folkert Gorter the site is well designed and offers the mind a place to feed beyond every click.
