My mobile photo updates are now part of my weekly routine on tumblr, wether it was a conscious decision or not, I’ll never know. It’s fun. Lately, I’m getting a kick out of flipping my images, a simple trick, I know, but the results can be pretty entertaining. The world can look pretty amazing when symmetry is applied.
Notes from YouTube Page:

“IKEA introduces UPPLEVA, a completely new range that integrates smart TV and sound system with furniture. UPPLEVA brings beauty and functionality to the living room, solving the problem of cable clutter and miss-match between TV and furniture.

You will find UPPLEVA in Stockholm, Milan, Paris, Gdansk and Berlin in June 2012. During autumn 2012 UPPLEVA is available in all of the stores in Sweden, Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Norway and Portugal , and during spring 2013 in even more countries.”

This is all very exciting. Rumors are flying that suggest Leica will be releasing an M10 version to their digital camera lineup that shoots exclusively black and white. Yes, no color photos coming from this camera body, just super detailed black and white photos rendered from a real black and white sensor. The other interesting bit of news is that this model will not have an LCD display on it’s backside, you’ll have to frame it all up old school style through the range finder. Are you as intrigued as I am? May 10th is the rumored date you should mark on your calendar for it’s release.

I have to admit, there have been so many brilliant photos and videos of the northern lights lately that I have kind of become a bit desensitized to them. However, this well captured footage by Christian Mülhauser is a good one to check out. Side note: the music is pretty intense towards the end of the video, check your volume.

Notes from Vimeo:

“Last week I was again in Norway for shooting northern lights. This time I was very lucky, there was a lot of activity on the sky especially on the 24 January. The scenes are from Ravnastua, Skoganvarre and Lakselv. The first two days I had a lot of trouble with frozen Cameras. It was -25°C (-13°F) and after 1-2 hours of shooting the lens was frozen.

I used a Canon 5D MarkII with ML, a 7D and a 550D with ML. All the scenes were shoot with this 3 lenses: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L on 5D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on 7D and my Samyang 8mm/f3.5 on 550D.”

Notes from Vimeo:

“Prime Burger Restaurant, in Midtown Manhattan. For many of the guys that work here, the restaurant is like a second home – some of them have been slinging burgers, making shakes, and waiting on customers at this location for decades. Opened in 1938, the place hasn’t been altered since the early ’60s, and it looks all the better for it. Here the waiters and workers of Prime Burger discuss their views on their chosen profession, and the unique nature of the place itself.”

It’s not easy for companies to keep track of their brand presentation across all the platforms, screens and devices that exist these days. Especially when you’re in the app space, and you have hundreds of third party app designers and developers out there creating new experiences specifically for your device. How do you keep it from looking like a complete yard sale? That’s where ‘standards’, ‘pattern libraries’ and ‘style guides’ come into the picture as a super important tool to help designers and developers herd the cats and help keep things aligned. Android has chosen to publicly display their nicely designed and organized design principles, patterns, colors, typography and creative vision for all to see. Very inspiring for those out there who are trying to slay the same dragons… Wow, ‘herding cats’ and ‘slaying dragons’ in one post!

I’ve seen a few flavors of mirror screen concepts coming from different tech companies in the past few years. Most notable was a Yahoo! powered experience I saw at the 2006 CES (I almost got in trouble for taking that photo)… This version by the ‘R&D Lab’ takes it to the next level with speech recognition and some nifty gestural technology. I like the overall idea, especially for traffic/weather news and other bits of information that help us to start the day. I could also see this tech being useful in retail dressing rooms for size requests and deeper assortment browsing, or just for playing video that relates to the product you’ve tried on. Lot’s of potential.
