I have to admit, there have been so many brilliant photos and videos of the northern lights lately that I have kind of become a bit desensitized to them. However, this well captured footage by Christian Mülhauser is a good one to check out. Side note: the music is pretty intense towards the end of the video, check your volume.

Notes from Vimeo:

“Last week I was again in Norway for shooting northern lights. This time I was very lucky, there was a lot of activity on the sky especially on the 24 January. The scenes are from Ravnastua, Skoganvarre and Lakselv. The first two days I had a lot of trouble with frozen Cameras. It was -25°C (-13°F) and after 1-2 hours of shooting the lens was frozen.

I used a Canon 5D MarkII with ML, a 7D and a 550D with ML. All the scenes were shoot with this 3 lenses: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L on 5D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on 7D and my Samyang 8mm/f3.5 on 550D.”

Notes from Vimeo:

“Prime Burger Restaurant, in Midtown Manhattan. For many of the guys that work here, the restaurant is like a second home – some of them have been slinging burgers, making shakes, and waiting on customers at this location for decades. Opened in 1938, the place hasn’t been altered since the early ’60s, and it looks all the better for it. Here the waiters and workers of Prime Burger discuss their views on their chosen profession, and the unique nature of the place itself.”

It’s not easy for companies to keep track of their brand presentation across all the platforms, screens and devices that exist these days. Especially when you’re in the app space, and you have hundreds of third party app designers and developers out there creating new experiences specifically for your device. How do you keep it from looking like a complete yard sale? That’s where ‘standards’, ‘pattern libraries’ and ‘style guides’ come into the picture as a super important tool to help designers and developers herd the cats and help keep things aligned. Android has chosen to publicly display their nicely designed and organized design principles, patterns, colors, typography and creative vision for all to see. Very inspiring for those out there who are trying to slay the same dragons… Wow, ‘herding cats’ and ‘slaying dragons’ in one post!

I’ve seen a few flavors of mirror screen concepts coming from different tech companies in the past few years. Most notable was a Yahoo! powered experience I saw at the 2006 CES (I almost got in trouble for taking that photo)… This version by the ‘R&D Lab’ takes it to the next level with speech recognition and some nifty gestural technology. I like the overall idea, especially for traffic/weather news and other bits of information that help us to start the day. I could also see this tech being useful in retail dressing rooms for size requests and deeper assortment browsing, or just for playing video that relates to the product you’ve tried on. Lot’s of potential.

Jawbone is releasing an exciting and innovative new health tracking device and mobile app. It’s reminiscent of the NIKE/Apple partnership but not attached to an expensive shoe, and not specific to one activity, opening the door to a much larger customer base. You can now toss your old heart rate monitor and pedometer and that other ‘ometer’ thing that really never worked properly and left a funky rash on your arm. This wristband/app combo looks very promising, and certain to inspire other companies to dabble in the space. I’m curious to see if they have integrated a way within the app to share and extend one’s personal health data to the social nets and maybe even your Doctor? Interesting stuff.

I’ve got to say, things were looking pretty grim for ol’ Facebook when Google+ rolled out. G+ seemed to offer up some pretty nice enhancements to the social networking space with ‘circles’ and being able to follow non-friends, similar to Twitter. For me though, it lacked in the area of visual presentation, other than the ‘circles’ interface, the concept was pretty reminiscent of Facebook’s aging interface and overall layout/flow. Myself, being an extremely visual person, I was pretty underwhelmed by G+ in that respect.

Having said all that, I am really excited about Facebook’s new ‘timeline’ layout. I followed the simple steps to activate the invite via this TechCrunch post and am having a lot of fun with it (screen shots from my ‘timeline’ above). The timeline functionality offers something beyond just a ‘nifty interface’ that I really value and I’m certain many others who have been using Facebook for many years will value as well. It’s an amazing capture of your life, friends and the memorable milestones, all in one place. It’s a display of Facebook’s built equity, our loyalty and years of engagement that makes this ‘timeline’ so powerful and enjoyable. Something very special that Google + will have to build and earn on their own, over time, if they can keep up. Nice job Facebook.

From Netscape to Chrome, this interactive infographic allows us to rediscover those old browsers that we all criticized, cursed at and at times even celebrated. Yes, we are indeed, total geeks.

Side note: Ironically, this experience is a bit of a browser snob and “is optimized for Internet Explorer 9+, Firefox 4+, Safari 4+, Chrome 10+, Opera 11+ or newer”. How appropriate. haha.

This is a very interesting and futuristic eCommerce touch interface concept for use as a way to bridge the gap from an in-store experience to an online sales experience. The design was created by a Swedish mobile production company called B-Reel and the product is called ‘TRE’. I think the interface, as ‘minority report’ as it seems, definitely has some very practical aspects to it and could be used for a variety of things outside of just eComm… e.g., home schooling, B2B product demos and even for social use. Have a look.

This, to me, is very exciting on many levels. Above are screen grabs from 360cities.net, a site that I have posted about a few times before because I find it to be a really innovative space to discover 360 panoramic photos. What makes this image of the Strahov library in Prague so special, is the fact that it’s the largest photo ever taken indoors as of March 2011 (40 Gigapixels). To give you an idea of how big that actually is, it’s like 5,000 times bigger than the photos coming out of a Nikon D50 or something like that. Crazy big! I also find this image to be super amazing because I have been lucky to experience the Strahov library personally back in 2006, and I know first hand that they don’t let just anyone take photos there, I almost had my camera taken away from me… So, it’s a pretty rare opportunity to even get a snap of this library, let alone the largest to date. Be sure to check it out and browse around 360cities.net a bit if you haven’t already. Don’t forget to go full screen for the best results.

More detail from 360cities.net:

“This image was created from 3,000 individual photos stitched together into a single image that is 280,000 x 140,000 pixels. That’s around 40 gigapixels, or 4000 megapixels. If you printed this photo it would be 23 meters (or 78 feet) long!”
