This past week I decided to check out the Society6 artist’s community/storefront. I have been shopping around for an online print and frame service for some of my photography anyway, so I decided, why not try a service that also connects artists together, similar to how the Blurb DIY book service does? So far, I really dig the simple interface, all the great printing options and the community sharing. Some folks have even stopped by to show me some support…(I suspect many of them are fellow VW Microbus fans). I did order a framed photo print and I’m eagerly awaiting to see how it comes out. For a 26′x22′ custom framed print I found it to be very affordable. I should be seeing it in the next couple of weeks. I’ll report back on the print and frame quality. Stay tuned…

Wide Angle & Macro Lens Adapter -> Photojojo

I love toys, especially toys that enhance the toys that I already have. Photojojo just added a wide angle and macro lens adapter for SLR cameras to their photo-centric product line. Seems like a nice way to get some extra miles out of that old lens you’re getting a little tired of.

This week was kind of an interesting week in type design. You wonder how these things can happen when there are so many well designed typeface options out there to work with. One fine example, I recently discovered the Ogaki Typeface on behance.net (above). Flickr Set: Hong Kong and Macau in the 1950s -> Phil Roeder

I’m finding a ton of amazing things on Flickr lately. The above shots are vintage photos taken by Des Moines based Photographer Phil Roeder’s father (possibly with a Zeiss Ikon Contessa from what I’ve gathered from his Flickr page) while travelling Hong Kong and Macau in the 1950s. Wonderful retro coloring and contrast along with the fact that they are just amazing images from another time that will never be duplicated make this photo set a must see.

Camera Phone Lenses -> Fisheye, Macro, and Wide Angle

Like a kid in a camera store, I’m pretty excited about this discovery made and passed along by a friend of mine last week (Thanks Aaron!). These little lenses magnetically hold in place on any camera phone and judging from the shots on http://photojojo.com/ they really work! There are three lenses available -> Fisheye, Macro, and Wide Angle. The other cool feature is that they can be worn as jewelry around your neck, similar to a charm necklace. One of the coolest gift/gadget ideas I’ve seen in a long while.

the Deadly Syndrome -> Nolens Volens (Now Available)

I’m digging the above ‘record release show’ poster designed by Will Etling, lead singer of the fantastic California based band ‘The Deadly Syndrome’. Yesterday they released their new album called ‘Nolens Volens’. All wordy setup aside… it’s a super solid, thoughtful, nicely textured album and I have been listening to it almost daily for the last couple of weeks. Raiki -> 3D Illustration/Toy Design

I came across the above rendering by illustrator Cesc Grané this morning on Yayeveryday.com, it made me realize that I hadn’t seen or been very inspired by any recent toy designs lately. This ‘Raiki’ doll seems pretty interesting to me though. I really like the 3D rendering style and the colors chosen to create the world he lives in. Seems pretty fresh. There will be some kind of story updated on the site, perhaps animated, all said to be ‘coming soon’. Till then, all I know is “Raiki is a magical wooden boy. He was created by energy from lightning in the midst of a mysterious forest.” and that there are some really cool desktops patterns like the below to download and enjoy.

Haroshi を立ち上げる -> Recycled Skateboard Art

I really enjoy the artwork of artist, skater and designer known as Haroshi. Having grown up a skater and a Super Mario Bros addict I naturally gravitate towards these works in a big way. Each iconic wall mural and piece of sculpture is created from recycled skateboard decks. Glued together, cut and shaped these decks have been smoothed to perfection to create everything from moose heads to teddy bears. Great example of recycled artwork… These images were taken by Brandon Shigeta at PLSMIS Gallery in Tokyo. Many more pics on his site. I first saw this on diskursdisko.de.

‘Vans and the places where they were’ -> Joe Stevens

As a setup, or disclaimer for this post, I have discovered that for whatever reason I’m drawn in to older decrepit vehicles, especially vans and especially circa 1970s. I don’t know why. Seems others are as well, probably because we grew up with them. Filmaker and photographer Joe Stevens has pulled together a terrific collection of images of retro vans for us to enjoy. The site is clean and simple much like the video game console site that I posted yesterday… I must be posting from a consistent train of thought this week. That’s a first.

Description from site:

“Vans and the places where they were documents surviving custom and conversion vans across the West and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. The project began in 1996 and currently consists of hundreds of images shot on 120mm film.”

I came across designer Patrick Molnar’s video game console archive site called ‘Consollection.de’ and thought it was pretty fun, simply designed and interesting. Not only does it reveal a bunch of gaming systems that I had no idea existed, it also gives us a nice eye shot of console industrial design trends over the past 25+ years. Everything from faux wood paneling, knobby paddles to the sleek minimalist looking designs that are more of today’s era. The site also holds tech specs and product info on each console as well, making it really informative and a good throwback. Be sure to check out Patrick Molnar’s portfolio site via the link below.

Polaroid -> One Pic1000

The classic Polaroid self-developing film camera is back with their soon to be released ‘One Pic1000′ instant camera. Since 2007 many loyal Polaroid enthusiasts have been hoping this re-launch would occur. The company plans to release multiple retro-chic designs and has even announced that pop star lady gaga will be the creative director for a super fancy limited edition line. Christmas Sweater Collection -> Lars Holdhus

The whole nostalgic humorous ‘Christmas Sweater’ phenomenon is just a fun once a year holiday party garnish for most of us, for Holland’s Lars Holdhus it seems that he has taken this idea much further and has a huge collection of sweaters + an impressive site to view them all at. Cannondale Dutchess -> Bicycle Design

Cannondale has partnered with designer Wytze Van Mansum to produce this innovative new woman’s bicycle called the ‘Dutchess’. The most noticeable design enhancement is the crank system, breaking free from a traditional exposed sprocket this ‘integrated transmission’ system is concealed by the organic frame tubing and all gears live within the back hub. I’m sure the intent was to prevent any potential for a woman’s pant leg or skirt to get caught on an oily chain. Nicely designed and very elegant in a appearance. The Pop-up Book of Phobias -> Don Vanone

If you like pop-up books and horror stories, or just horrific things in general you’ll enjoy this quirky pop-up design by Don Vanone. The above vimeo video gives you a nice page by page preview of the book. You may want to turn off the volume or listen to some music while viewing b/c the atmospheric fumbling noise of him opening each spread was killing me. I’m not even sure where or how I found this site last weekend, but I saved it in my delicious bookmarks and discovered it today while browsing ideas for a good Friday post. Must have been a late find last Saturday evening… Regardless, Amsterdam based curator Max Akkerman founded ‘Maxalot Gallery’ and their web presence has an amazing collection of art and wall art available for purchase. Everything from trippy line art renderings to amazing time-lapse cityscapes all coming from interesting designers e.g., Joshua Davis, Paul Louise Miller, Jackson Chang and many others. Great browse for inspiration as well as home decor shopping.

Leica -> M9 Release

Classic German camera design company Leica has come out with the M9 which will be replacing the now cult classic M8. The M9 will be selling for a cool 7K, not the most affordable camera on the planet but definitely one of the most desired. Any expert camera sales person will tell you that the Leica M8 and M9, with their steep price tags are probably not the best deals out there but if you’re looking for a Porsche rather than a peppy Toyota… you get the idea. The M9 is a full – frame 24 x 36mm and offers an extremely high-resolution sensor and beautiful high performance M lenses. Now I’m going to go salivate over more pics via the link below.
