I first took notice of Josh Keys in one of my new favorite art culture mags ‘Hi-Fructose‘ (Vol. 12) this past July. After obsessing over the article in the magazine for a while I decided to jump on to his website, I’m glad I did. There are even more of his tripped out naturalistic/urban scene mashups to be found there, complete with detailed close up images! As if it’s not interesting enough that he combines different animal species, that would never be seen hanging together (like the bear and octopus above), he then places them into a post apocalyptic scene of sorts and then to top it off crops his images with a sliced and diced scene geometry that is reminiscent of a of natural history museum diorama. For whatever reason the combination of all those elements creates imagery that keeps my eyes gravitationally bound and scrubbing over every detail. I’d love to see them in person.
