Bas Jan Ader was a Dutch conceptual artist, performance artist, photographer and filmmaker. As much as he was all of those things he was also a mystery to many of us. His works primarily consisted of odd scenarios captured as short film performance pieces. One of his most popular was called ‘I’m too sad to tell you’ (1970) that consists of the artist crying in front of a camera after a brief title. His obsession with capturing free-fall/forced-fall also became some of his more popular work. His death was even marked in time as a performance piece called ‘In Search of the Miraculous’ where he was lost at sea in 1975 between Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Ireland on a 13ft pocket cruiser (a modified Guppy 13 named “Ocean Wave”). Whether or not his death was part of the original concept of ‘In Search of the Miraculous’ we may never know. However, his work and what is known about him and his life is extremely captivating and mysterious. Learn more about Bas Jan Ader via the links below.
