Music Innovation -> Hauschka

How much material is contained in a tone? from realiction on Vimeo.

In my mind, what I’m seeing/hearing while taking in this documentary on Düsseldorf based musician Hauschka, is musical innovation that is part sound effect, part performance art and part throwing how we approach our everyday musical instruments out the window… and then maybe setting them afire on impact.

Hauschka creates new sounds and tones by adding to, tweaking or stripping away elements from otherwise traditional instruments. Some music traditionalist/conservatives may think that this is a completely insane approach to music creation. However, I wonder if what Hauschka is working on is any different from what Adolph Rickenbacher was experimenting with when he started to design electric guitars? Regardless, the music coming from his ‘prepared piano’ is in my opinion both inventive and extraordinary.

Notes from Vimeo:

»A filmic essay by Andreas Huth, describing the work of the Düsseldorf based musician Hauschka. It includes filmmaterial of Ferndorf, the village where Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka) was born and also exclusive material from a concert with string quartet in the Berger Kirche/Düsseldorf in october 2008.«
