The Making of the “Closer” Video -> NIN

This video interests me mainly because of director Mark Romanek’s dissection of the creative process and his interpretation of it. I’m not the most loyal of NIN fans, nor did I partake in (what I call) the “HR Giger-esque/Goth thing” during the 90′s when I was a teenager. I am however, intrigued by creative works that are considered to be “classics” or “major influences” having to do with any certain era or medium.

This 28 minute documentary on the making of NIN’s now classic music video “Closer” with commentary from director Mark Romanek is an interesting insider’s view of a director’s struggle to cross through MTv’s red tape and “sell” a concept to artist Trent Reznor in 1994. It also gives us a bit of mental step-by-step as Mark Romanek translates elements from NIN’s recording to his own visual interpretation. Many interesting details from this shoot are discussed, from hanging Trent from wires, covering up “pig stench” with Old Spice to mundane budget constraints. A must see for those who aspire to direct edgy movies/music videos or for those who are already knee deep in doing so.
