The Attack of the Robots of Nebula 5

the attack of the robots from nebula-5 from Chema García Ibarra on Vimeo.

This Sundance Honorable Mention film created by Chema García Ibarra (from Spain, 2009) is pure genius. From the well designed black and white Alfred Hitchcock-esc style of cinematography, the retro doomsday robot story line, the dreary-monotone narrative and the odd-ball awkward hero character. It’s all there. To me this is dead on my “brand” of humor, suspense and sarcasm.

At first while watching the film I find myself thinking that the robots will eventually come down and destroy the earth. However, as the story unfolds I find myself wondering if this is more a portrait of the inner mind and thought process of a lonely, clinically insane person. Someone depressed and paranoid about something that he/she has mentally fabricated in their own mind and inflicted upon themselves. Or, is this just some introverted, brainy kid with a harmless comic book addiction and a big imagination?

That’s what I love about this film. I’m left hanging. I’m left looking at this lonely kid sitting on a folding chair in the middle of a dirty, buzzing, urban wasteland. After watching I felt just as lonely. I was left to ponder his same thoughts, desperately hoping to be spared. I am left to believe that they are indeed coming to kill us all in due time.

My only criticism on the production of this film is that on Youtube the subtitles are difficult to read.

I found this video on Vimeo and it is much easier to read. Enjoy.
