Dust’s Selects – King Khan and the Shrines, Phantom Planet and The Redwalls

The older you get the tougher it gets to stumble upon great new music. At least for me (and no, I’m not that old). I do have less time to hang out at the record store or surf Myspace and Pitchforkmedia.com because of my hobbyist photography habit, recording weird music habit, riding my bike habit, walking my dog habit, my day job habit, and keeping up with this blog (which is becoming a habit) the list goes on… I’m sure many of you can relate. I’m not complaining, I love my habits, but I do miss having a constant flow of fresh sounds pumping through my stereo like in the days of my early 20’s.

Luckily, I still have some good friends who’ll leave me random late night messages on my cell phone or text me with a barely legible or understandable list of bands that I should keep an “ear to the rail for”. I try to reciprocate as much as possible.

A couple weeks ago I got one of those random texts from my best pal Dustin who currently lives in Brooklyn, NYC (we’ve known each other for going on 20 years). I just started to crack into his recommendations last night. I must say that ol’ Dustin has struck again! He’s one of those rare friends who I have always shared similar tastes with, everything from a good slab of ribs to the latest nerdy iPhone app. Anyway, I’m not saying you’ll all agree with our tastes, but if you’re looking for something fresh, do yourself a favor and click through to the bands below if you don’t already have them on your playlist:

King Khan and the Shrines -> http://www.myspace.com/kingkhantheshrines

Phantom Planet -> http://www.myspace.com/phantomplanet

The Redwalls -> http://www.theredwalls.com/

Thanks Dustin! Keep em’ coming.

    You know they’ve done studies that show the type of music you listen to between the ages of 25-27 is the type of music you will listen to for the rest of your life. Which is no good for me because during those years I was really into Enya for some reason. but who am I to defy a study, I am stuck.
